The history of the league

The history of the League of Friends goes back to 1949 when it was set up following the birth of the National Health Service at St Mary’s Hospital.  We are eager to build an archive of our proud history, and you can help.

Join us

We welcome new volunteers to join our ever expanding team of helpers. Take at look at what we do.

We are here to make a difference.

The League of Friends at St. Mary’s provide many of the extras which means so much to the patients and staff. A Main Shop provides many essentials, a Cafe facility in the Outpatients department and a Coffee Bar in  the Enablement Centre serve welcome refreshments. All our outlets are staffed by volunteers with profits supporting Portsmouth Community Health care projects and working throughout the Hospital to provide equipment and improving conditions for patients and staff alike.

Building on our success since we started in 1949, we continue to modernise the services we deliver and support the community from this central Portsmouth location.  We have two splendid shops which are open Monday to Friday as well as the Enablement Centre Coffee Bar. With the hospital becomes busier at weekends, we hope to be able to extend our openings subject to new volunteers – see how you can join us!
